Everything gluten free at McDonald's in the UK šš
Fast food chains aren't the best for gluten free but you'll be surprised that there are a few options at McDonald's which are gluten free and some even safe for coeliacs!

āBefore we start, this is very importantā¦
UK McDonaldās donāt advertise that they offer any gluten free options and thatās down to the fact that, because of the size and the way they run their kitchens, they just canāt rule out the chances of cross-contamination.
Thatās understandable, and to be honest, Iād rather that than risks not be considered. But I do wonder how their restaurants in other countries can offer gluten free when theyāre probably set up in a very similar wayā¦ š¤·š¼āāļø
Anyway, the cross-contamination risks could come from a lot of different things but Iād say the main ones are the fryers, the utensils and human error. For example, youāll see in this article, that there are some McDonaldās menu options that are naturally gluten free and fried only with other gluten free options, but you must check that the branch doesnāt use re-filtered oil.
Also, mistakes will happen from time to time and if, for example, you decided to opt for a cheeseburger without the bun (to make it gluten free), someone could put the patty on the bun, realise itās supposed to be bun-less so then takes it back off, but at that point itās contaminated with gluten. š°
Unfortunately, youāre the only person that can decide whether youāre happy and confident to eat at McDonaldās knowing these risks. Weāre here to give you a breakdown of everything that is, or can be made, gluten free so that you can make an informed decision.
To clarify, this is for UK McDonaldās only and this should be used as a guide and not an official allergen matrix because menus and ingredients change all the time.
š
So, letās see if youāre lovinā what weāve got for you š

Now, donāt get too excited, because McDonaldās donāt actually offer any gluten free bread here in the UK, meaning you canāt just rock up and grab yourself a gluten free Bacon and Egg McMuffin.
However, when you take a deep dive into the ingredients like I have, youāll actually see that, minus the bread, there are some gluten free options from the breakfast menu.
If you visit a McDonaldās and ask for, letās say, a Sausage and Egg McMuffin without the bread, youāll just be given the egg, sausage patty and cheese in a box. You could then eat it as it is OR just use your own bread to finish off the breakfast muffin!
Yes, itās still a faff and frustrating that you canāt get the finished product, plus youāll probably be charged the same price for it if you had the bun, but itās an option if youāre on the go or with friends and donāt have to be the odd one out.
All of these ingredients in the breakfast range are gluten free:
š³ Egg
š Pork Sausage Patty
š„ Back Bacon
š§ Cheddar Cheese

ā ļø Cross-contamination will always be a risk in McDonaldās, so when you order, make them aware so that they take extra care with your order
ā Remember that brown sauce is not gluten free because it contains barley so make sure that you donāt order any of the above with brown sauce
ā Breakfast menu items that arenāt gluten free, or canāt be altered to be gluten free, include the Cheesy Bacon Flatbread, Pancakes, wraps, muffins or any of the Porridge
And hereās a breakfast item that is naturally gluten free!

ā
Hash Browns are gluten free and safe for coeliacs* as McDonaldās state that they are only fried with the fries and veggie dippers which are also both gluten free - see below for the details. ā¬ļø
ā
Mini Hash Browns and the Mini Hash Browns Sharebox are also gluten free!

Hash Brown Ingredients
ā ļø *Make sure that the branch doesnāt use re-filtered oil for their Hash Browns or they might not be safe for coeliacs if the oil has been used elsewhere.
š Burgers

Similar to the breakfast, if you order a burger without the bun, there are lots of menu options that will then be suitable for gluten free and coeliacs because the ingredients are naturally gluten free.
All of these ingredients in the burgers are gluten free:
š Beef Patty
š§ Cheddar Cheese
š§
Grilled Onions
š§
Red Onion Rings
š„ Pickle Slices
š„¬ Lettuce
š
The below images show the ingredients used in a McDonaldās Big Mac. As you can see, only the bun contains wheat but all of the other parts of the burger donāt contain any gluten.

So, the following burgers are gluten free when ordered WITHOUT the bread:
ā

ā ļø Cross Contamination will always be a risk in McDonaldās so when you order, make them aware so that they take extra care with your order
ā Note that none of the chicken burgers or the Filet-o-Fish are gluten free because they are coated in a gluten batter
š Chicken McNuggets & Selects

ā Something I only found out very recently and checked about 1000 times to make sure, is that the McDonaldās Veggie Dippers are gluten free! Theyāre also cooked with other gluten free items so safe for coeliacs* too!
See the full list of ingredients below:

Veggie Dippers Ingredients
ā ļø *Make sure that the branch doesnāt use re-filtered oil for their Veggie Dippers or they might not be safe for coeliacs if the oil has been used elsewhere
ā Note that no other nuggets, selects or cheese bites are gluten free
š„ Wraps & Salads

Now, Iām not going to suggest ordering a wrap without the wrap, to make it gluten free, because all youād really have is a heap of filling, so letās assume a gluten free wrap is out of the question.
McDonaldās did issue an allergy update for all of their non-gluten containing salads which stated āDue to the handling of crispy onions in our restaurants, we cannot guarantee that our salads do not contain traces of wheatā. It was removed at some point from the menu item but remains as a may contain on the allergen matrix so I would suggest avoiding these if you are coeliac.
That means that the following salads are technically gluten free but have a āmay containā warning for gluten cross-contamination:
ā ļø Side Salad - may contain
ā ļø Grilled Chicken Salad - may contain
ā ļø Grilled Chicken and Bacon Salad - may contain
ā Wraps are not gluten free
ā The crispy chicken salads are not gluten free because of the batter
š Fries & Sides

Everything is better with French Fries š
ā Fries in the UK are not made with any gluten containing ingredients and are only fried with the veggie dippers and hash browns which also donāt contain any gluten, so safe for coeliacs*

ā
Pineapple Stick
ā
Carrot Sticks
ā ļø Side Salad - may contain
ā ļø *Make sure that the branch doesnāt use re-filtered oil for their Fries or they might not be safe for coeliacs if the oil has been used elsewhere
š Happy Meals

Gluten free kiddies will also be happy because there are ways to order a happy meal gluten free!
ā
Veggie Dippers Happy Meal - all gluten free and safe for coeliacs*
ā
Hamburger Happy Meal - WITHOUT THE BUN
ā
Cheeseburger Happy Meal - WITHOUT THE BUN
ā The Chicken Burger/Nuggets & Fish Fingers/Bites Happy Meals are not gluten free
ā ļø *Make sure that the branch doesnāt use re-filtered oil for their fries or Veggie Dippers or they might not be safe for coeliacs if the oil has been used elsewhere
š¦ Desserts

The good new is that, McDonaldās regularly change their McFlurry flavours so gluten free ones might be available soon. The bad news is that currently, there are no gluten free McFlurryās on the menu: the Oreo McFlurry, Maltesers McFlurry and Smarties McFlurry all contain gluten and the limited edition Mars McFlurry also contains gluten.
If youāre really desperate, then you can just have the plain McFlurry with the chocolate sauce which is gluten free but always check on their online allergen guide or ask a staff member to find out what is safe for you.
ā
McDonaldās McFlurry ice cream is gluten free but itās the toppings and sauces you need to look out for
ā ļø Always check the toppings for gluten ingredients or may contain warnings when new flavours are introduced
ā Currently, none of the McFlurry flavours are gluten free
ā Other desserts including the Pies, Brownies, Muffins, Cookies and donuts are not gluten free so avoid these. But remember, thereās always the gluten free pineapple stickā¦
šµ McCafĆ© & Frappes

The McCafĆ© range used to be completely gluten free but with the addition of the Biscoff Frappe, it means that thereās a few non-gluten free items on there, plus some new allergy updates for āmay containsā. This is why itās so important to regularly check allergen matrixās even when you think your regular order is gluten free - ingredients and processes change all the time and we might not be straight up notified of it.

š„¤ Milkshakes & Cold Drinks

All of the below McDonaldās cold drinks and milkshakes are gluten free. You might think it silly to include these, but there are a lot of instances where gluten is hidden in things youād least expect, so itās always best to be sure.

RECAP!
So, maybe youāll try it for yourself and visit a McDonaldās this weekend, but ultimately, itās a decision youāll need to make as to whether you feel comfortable eating from McDonalds considering the cross-contamination risks.
Here are the main points to recap:
ā
Some breakfast options can be gluten free if asked for without the bun
ā
Most burgers can also be gluten free if asked for without the bun
ā
Veggie Dippers, Hash Browns and Fries are all gluten free
ā
There are a few happy meals that can also be gluten free
ā Beware of brown sauce because this contains gluten
ā No chicken burgers or nuggets are gluten free because theyāre coated in a gluten batter
ā Sweet & Sour dip contains gluten
ā ļø Always make McDonaldās aware of your dietary needs when you order
ā ļø Understand that thereās a chance of cross-contamination
ā ļø Make sure the branch doesnāt re-filter the oil for the fries
ā ļø Always double check McFlurry toppings and new McCafĆ© flavours
